Aaron Rodgers says he isn’t sure if he’ll retire with Packers

Aaron Rodgers does not believe it is up to him to retire in a Green Bay Packers uniform.

While Aaron Rodgers could potentially play his entire NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, the reigning MVP isn’t entirely sold on that possibility coming to fruition.

When prompted by ESPN’s Kenny Mayne if he wanted to only wear one uniform, Rodgers offered this.

“Yeah, so far, it’s definitely been my team,” said Rodgers to Mayne. “I said last year I didn’t know if that was actually possible to be able to finish there. I still feel like that’s kind of where we’re at. I mean, I don’t know if a lot that’s in my hands, but I guess we’ll just kind of see as we go.”

When Mayne responded by saying this doesn’t help Packers fans sleep well at night, Rodgers chuckled and gave us all this soundbite to sink our teeth into.

“[Laughter] Ken, you and I both know that’s not how it works.”

Green Bay Packers: Will Aaron Rodgers retire with the team that drafted him?

Rodgers is about to enter his age-39 season. There is a potential out in his contract in 2022. Otherwise, he will remain under contract with the Packers through the 2023 NFL season. Rodgers would be hitting free agency in 2024 ahead of his age-41 season. While he could plan to play deep into his 40s like Tom Brady, Rodgers may only want to play a few more seasons before retiring.

It is such a rarity for players to spend their entire careers with one organization. Even quarterbacking greats like Brady, Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Johnny Unitas and most recently Philip Rivers had to don new uniforms. So yes, there is a possibility that Rodgers plays for somebody else in his very late 30s or early 40s. However, sticking with one team is cool.

Rodgers being noncommittal about retiring as a Packer should make Green Bay fans very worried.
